With so many water systems neglected, here’s how to check for bad chemicals in your tap water
A new database allows people to check the levels of harmful chemicals in their local water supply. The database, created by a non-profit called the Environmental Working Group, gives access to water quality reports for the 50,000 or so water companies serving communities across the country.
It’s based on testing and reports the government requires every public water system to carry out.
People can enter their zip code to find the report for the water system serving their community. The reports list every chemical found in the water and how the levels compare to the recommended or allowable amounts. Many chemicals commonly found in drinking water can increase the risk of cancer, brain damage and other illnesses.
